SpaceX Launch News Live: A SpaceX spaceship blasted off from Florida on Wednesday, headed for the International Space Station and carrying a Russian crewmate, in a voyage that carries symbolic significance amid the Ukraine war. Anna Kikina, the only female cosmonaut in service, is part of the Crew-5 mission, which also includes one Japanese and two American astronauts. “Let’s do this,” said Crew-5 mission commander Nicole Mann, the first Native American in space, shortly before liftoff from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at noon.

Grenade attack in Balochistan’s industrial town injures 5 members of a family
Five members of a family, including women and children, were critically injured in a grenade attack on the house of a tribal elder in an industrial town in Pakistan’s Balochistan province. The grenade attack took place on Tuesday night after which the police confirmed that unidentified motorcyclists hurled the hand grenade at the house of tribal elder Salahuddin Zehri in Hub, reported Dawn. The injured women and children were rushed to Jam Ghulam Qadir hospital and later shifted to Karachi for treatment. Zehri was not home at the time of the grenade attack on his house.
Telangana adds 61 new cases to COVID tally
Telangana on Wednesday recorded 61 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the overall caseload to 8,38,243. Hyderabad district reported the highest number of cases at 41. A COVID-19 bulletin said 99 people recuperated from the infection raising the cumulative number of recoveries to date to 8,33,585. The recovery rate stood at 99.44%.
TN posts 421 new COVID-19 cases; nil fatality
Tamil Nadu on Wednesday logged 421 new COVID-19 cases pushing the overall tally to 35,85,427 while the toll remained unchanged at 38,047 with zero fresh fatalities. Chennai and Chengalpet topped the list at 92 and 37 cases respectively, while the remaining was spread across other districts, a medical bulletin said. Recoveries grew to 35,42,208 with 505 people recuperating from the virus in the last 24 hours, leaving 5,172 active cases.
Major blaze in east Delhi market, 35 fire tenders at spot
A major fire broke out at Gandhi Nagar Market in east Delhi here on Wednesday evening, officials said. Around 35 fire tenders and 150 firefighters were trying to control the blaze which broke out at around 5.40 pm, the officials said, adding the operation was still underway around 10.30 pm. The officials said no casualties have been reported so far. The fire started in a shop in the Nehru lane where mainly garments and hosiery outlets are located.
Virgin Atlantic to end flights between Hong Kong, London
British airline Virgin Atlantic on Wednesday announced it will no longer fly between London and Hong Kong, blaming the prolonged closure of Russian airspace. After Russia invaded Ukraine in February, Britain, Canada, and European Union countries banned Russian aircraft from their airspace. Russia retaliated by closing its airspace to dozens of countries including the UK.
Uganda Ebola outbreak death toll 29, says WHO
Sixty-three confirmed and probable cases have been reported in the Ebola outbreak in Uganda, including 29 deaths, the World Health Organization said on Wednesday. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus lamented that the outbreak, declared two weeks ago, was taking a deadly toll on health workers as well as patients. There are six species of the Ebolavirus genus and the one circulating in Uganda is the Sudan ebolavirus — for which there is currently no vaccine.

33 killed as bus carrying marriage party falls into gorge in Uttarakhand
Thirty-three members of a wedding party were killed and 19 injured when a bus carrying them fell into a gorge in Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal district, police said on Wednesday. The tragedy struck at around 7 pm on Tuesday as the bus, which was on its way to Kanda village in Bironkhal from Laldhang town in Haridwar, plunged into the 500-metre deep gorge near Simri bend.Local villagers were the first to reach the spot and used mobile phone flashlights to look for the victims in the night before assistance arrived.

Uttarkashi avalanche: SDRF, ITBP, NIM teams rescue mountaineers
Teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and Nehra Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) reached Advance Base Camp to rescue the trainees of NIM Uttarkashi, who were hit by an avalanche on Draupadi’s Danda Parvat 2 summit. Giving information to ANI, SDRF Commandant Manikant Mishra said that the three teams would first reach the Intermediate Camp and 1.5 km away at the avalanche site tomorrow to rescue 26 trainees and four bodies trapped at the avalanche site.
Four terrorists killed in separate encounters in J-K’s Shopian
Four terrorists, including those involved in the killing of a policeman three days ago, were neutralised in two encounters in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian on Wednesday, police said. Three Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) ultras were killed in Drach Keegam area, while a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist was eliminated in Moolu, they said. About the first encounter, a police spokesperson said security forces launched a cordon and search operation following inputs about the presence of terrorists there.

Mumbai police on toes for Shiv Sena factions’ Dussehra rallies in BKC and Shivaji Park
The Mumbai police are keeping a close vigil at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and the Shivaji Park ground in Dadar, the venues where Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his predecessor Uddhav Thackeray will address the rallies of their respective Shiv Sena factions, officials said on Wednesday. While the Thackeray faction will hold its rally at the historic Shivaji Park in Dadar in central Mumbai, a venue associated with the Shiv Sena since its inception in 1966, the rebel group led by Shinde has organised the event at the MMRDA ground at BKC in the suburbs. Both the leaders will address the rallies soon.

Puducherry logs 43 new COVID-19 cases
Puducherry registered 43 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total tally to 1,74,753, a senior Health Department official said here on Wednesday. Director of Health G Sriramulu in a release said the 43 cases surfaced at the end of examination of 373 samples in the last 24 hours, ending 10 AM today. While Puducherry region alone accounted for 34 out of the 43 new cases, Karaikal registered nine infections. Mahe and Yanam regions however had nil cases.

WTO slashes 2023 global trade forecast as recession looms
The World Trade Organization on Wednesday dramatically lowered its global trade forecast for 2023, as Russia’s war in Ukraine and other shocks take their toll on the world economy. Presenting a revision of their annual trade forecast, WTO economists said they expected the volume of global merchandise trade to grow 3.5 percent this year, which is slightly higher than their expectations in April. But they forecast it would grow by only one percent in 2023 — dramatically down from their expectations of 3.4-percent growth six months ago.
