Queen frontman Freddie Mercury may have sung about being “in love with [his] car,” but that was clearly more of a back-seat affair — did you know he didn’t even have a driver’s license? And did you also know that “I’m In Love With My Car” was actually written and sung by drummer Roger Taylor, while Mercury provided backup?

That’s right, the late singer never learned to drive legally and was almost always chauffeured around, often in a luxury car. One such Freddie-freighter was a 1974 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow that he used as his personal limousine from 1979 until he died in 1991. The Rolls that no doubt drove Mercury to some of his career’s most important recording sessions is now heading to auction at RM Sotheby’s November event. If seats could talk, these would surely tell some stories.

Finished in its original Silver Chalice over blue interior with the same 6.75-liter V8 engine, the Shadow also comes with a service history file featuring paperwork listing Mercury and his company Goose Productions Ltd as the client/owner, as well as Mary Austin, Mercury’s former partner, who helped maintain the vehicle.

After Mercury’s passing in ’91, the car continued to be used by his sister, Kashmira Cooke, who later purchased it from his estate and finally sold it to its current owner in 2013.
Mercury’s Shadow will cross the block in London, UK on November 5, and proceeds from the auction will help charitable organization Superhumans Center provide aid for war victims in Ukraine, specifically through funding a new hospital in the city of Lviv.
